SPARTA, Wis. - Biologists call deer a keystone species. By definition, a keystone species has a disproportionate effect on its environment relative to its abundance.Without a doubt, deer affect many other critters and help determine the types and numbers of various other species in an ecosystem.

How many deer are there in North America? Even though five states failed to report, numbers in this survey added up to 32,791,339 deer (whitetail, blacktail, and mule deer) in North America. The whitetail population alone exceeds 28 million animals - up some 495,324 deer from last year.The top five whitetail states are Texas (3 million), Michigan (1.85 million),Mississippi (1.75 million), Wisconsin (1.7 million), and Alabama (1.6 million)...
