Celebrate National Hunting and Fishing Day at Salato Wildlife Education Center

09-15-09

Frankfort, Kentucky - Shoot a bow, compete in a wild game cook-off, watch pointer dog demonstrations, or get weighed and tagged like a black bear in celebration of National Hunting and Fishing Day at the Salato Wildlife Education Center from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26. This free event is full of family-friendly activities and interactive exhibits.

Visitors can also see a replica mount of the new state record muskie and meet Sarah Terry, the 15-year-old Mt. Sterling girl who caught the fish from Cave Run Lake last fall. Terry will be at the Salato Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There's even more to enjoy during this event. Watch Quail Unlimited members demonstrate their pointer dogs at 11 a.m. and again at noon. Enjoy Dr. Richard Shore's interpretive presentation of John Muir, founder of the Sierra Club, from 1 - 2 p.m. Are you interested in the field work of biology? A biologist with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources will demonstrate the rocket nets used to capture birds at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Learn to tie flies with members of Trout Unlimited, or discover more about Ducks Unlimited by trying out a few duck calls. You can also try your hand at archery, simulated bow fishing or virtual hunting.

Finally, do you think that you know a thing or to when it comes to preparing wild game dishes? Then register for our free Fourth Annual Wild Game Cook-Off. All dishes must include wild game meat and prizes will be awarded to the top three winners. Pre-registration is required. Have an appetite? Join us and support the Wild Game Cook-Off by trying free samples of tasty dishes.

The Salato Center has a variety of native animals for the public to see, including a black bear, bobcats, elk, deer, bison, eagles, snakes and fish.
