State of the River Summit Set for Patuxent
The 2009 State of the River Summit will be held at the Calvert Marine Museum on Friday, October 9, from 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Each year concerned citizens, scientists, and policy makers gather to discuss the health and future of the Patuxent River. This, the fourth annual summit will focus on the Local Challenges of Sea Level Rise and Climate Change. The Summit is open to everyone and is free of charge.
Climate Change has been in the news often in recent years, frequently focusing on the plight of polar bears and melting ice caps. What has been less evident is the impact of this inevitable global shift on the Patuxent River and Chesapeake Bay. A recently released report from the Maryland Commission on Climate Change states that "the evidence for warming of the Earth is unequivocal." During the Summit, participants will have an opportunity to hear for themselves what the predicted changes are, and the probable affect on our climate and environment. From rising temperatures to increased precipitation to stronger storms, all of these changes contribute to a domino affect on the ecosystem that has direct and important implications for those of us living here today and into the future.
The Summit, chaired annually by Senator Bernie Fowler and moderated by Jack Greer of Maryland Sea Grant, will feature several speakers who participated in the Maryland Commission on Climate Change. Dr. Don Boesch, Professor of Marine Science and President of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, will lead the afternoon with an overview of the issue. He will be followed by Zoë Johnson from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, another member of the Commission, who will talk about what climate change means in a practical sense. Dr. Curtis Larsen, geologist and expert on the Calvert Cliffs, will provide an overview of historical trends and the state of current science in predicting climate impacts. This will be followed by a panel discussion on what is being done locally to plan for these challenges.
Don't miss what promises to be a very informative and important discussion on the local challenges we all need to start planning for. The Summit will close with a Call to Action by Senator Fowler. For more information, please visit www.calvertmarinemuseum.com.
