Too Many Deer
NORWALK, Conn. — WSTC/WNLK Newsroom — The Fairfield County Deer Management Alliance is warning of the ecological effects of deer overpopulation. An individual deer typically consumes about 10 lbs. of vegetation each day. Right now there's an abundance of the animal--something the Alliance notes has a negative impact on the environment.
"We're losing our shrubs, we're losing our wildflowers, and then the species that depends on those...they don't have a place to live," says Alliance chairwoman Patricia Sesto. "So too many deer are causing problems for our other forest creatures."
The optimum level of deer, according to Sesto, is roughly 10 to 20 per square mile. There's no telling exactly how many deer there are right now in the area but it's above the desired amount.
